GARNET CROW

New Single “Timeless Sleep”

11.21 Release!

GARNET CROW, who create a distinctive worldview with high-quality sound, release their new single “Timeless Sleep.” This medium number, with its gentle and delicate melody, is more lyrical than anything they have done before and stirs the imagination. AZUKI Nana’s lyrics carry sadness, tenderness, and warmth on a comfortably flowing sound. The result is a work full of a mysterious charm, as if it gently leads you away from the bustle of everyday life and into another world.

The single also includes “Timeless Sleep-groove more ‘call sky’ mix-,” a fresh number featuring Miguel Sa Pessoa, who worked on “To the Sunny Sea Without Water” (“水のない晴れた海へ”) from the first album, with an even more authentic Western-music taste; and “whiteout,” an energetic track that sets philosophical lyrics over a retro rock sound. Altogether, it is a release that shows still more of their breadth. We asked the members to talk about each song.

1. “Timeless Sleep”

Yuri Nakamura:I made this piece thinking I wanted to write a lyrical song unlike anything we had done before. Within a taut atmosphere with a sharp sense of tension, we placed a delicate melody and beautiful guitar phrases; at the same time, I deliberately sang the vocal in a raw, powerful way, trying to make it speak even more deeply to everyone’s hearts. I hope you enjoy the contrast between the vocal and the sound.

AZUKI Nana: Hmm, the production took a long time, didn’t it?

Hirohito Furui: It has a finish that brings the rock feeling fully to the front. To put it into words, I think listeners will feel warmth within winter’s crisp coldness. The scenery changes from scene to scene, and it makes the lyrics and Yuri Nakamura’s clear voice even more powerful and lifts them higher. The strings pizzicato that appears in the chorus should bring out the sadness even more.

Hitoshi Okamoto:The tear-jerking melody is in full force. I think it takes what feels like GARNET CROW one stronger step forward. Seasonally, it fits perfectly too.

2. “Timeless Sleep - groove more "call sky" mix -”

Yuri Nakamura:The sound came out clearer, with an even greater sense of transparency. I like the parts where it feels as if you are rising up toward the heavens. It has become a more delicate, lyrical work, and it is very cool.

AZUKI Nana: Now this is fresh again.

Hirohito Furui: In a word, it is a healing kind of sound. We went all in on a Western-music feel, and although it is the same song, it has a completely different finish; the idea is that listeners can choose according to what they need. Being able to enjoy it twice over is one of its selling points too.

Hitoshi Okamoto:It is a different arrangement of M-1. In contrast, this one is more subdued and intimate, and an impressive synth lead guides you into its distinctive atmosphere.

3. “whiteout”

Yuri Nakamura:For the coupling track, I made it thinking I wanted something with a stronger band color. It turned into a song that mainly features a sense of speed and drive we have not had before. It is a song that values momentum. It might be perfect for driving.

AZUKI Nana: You end up unable to tell sky from ground.

Hirohito Furui: With our recent singles, we have been particular about medium numbers so listeners can feel the lyrics and singing voice from the heart, but for a coupling track, we bring the sense of speed fully to the front and present another side of Yuri Nakamura’s appeal. A simple rock feel, speed, and a retro feeling all overlap, and it has come out as a track that answers the expectations of GARNET CROW fans who see it as a must-listen.

Hitoshi Okamoto:This song feels like something we have not had before. It is also our first up-tempo track in a while. It is full of the scent of the good old days.

YURI NAKAMURA (Vo.)

She says, “I can’t imagine a world without music,” and composes every GARNET CROW number. When asked what “creation” is, she says it is “expressing the clear, honest things that come from within myself, and the emotions that overflow.” The sensitive melody lines she spins and her distinctive, sentimental singing voice seep deeply into the hearts of those who hear them, leaving behind a mysterious vibration.

AZUKI Nana (Key)

As a lyricist, she has provided works to many artists. When writing lyrics, she says she is influenced by things close at hand, such as newspapers, magazines, paperbacks, and dictionaries, and uses anything as a reference. Her lyrics casually express the small emotions found in ordinary days, and even the inexpressible feelings deep inside people’s hearts. Perhaps they are born precisely because she has such a finely tuned antenna for taking ideas from the things around her.

FURUI HIROHITO (Key)

He handles arrangements not only for GARNET CROW but for many artists. The thing he says he has confidence in, more than anyone, is “willpower.” His policy is “dreams absolutely come true.” When asked what matters most, he answers, “love.” The delicate, warm sounds with a positive resonance that can be heard throughout his works may come from that side of him.

HITOSHI OKAMOTO (Gt)

Already active as a studio musician, he first picked up the guitar in junior high school. His favorite saying is “If you do it, it can be done; if you don’t, nothing can be done,” which gives a sense of his hard-working attitude. He does not speak at length, and his guitar tone, with its distinctive atmosphere and worldview, gives GARNET CROW’s songs their unique color.
