GARNET CROW “Over Drive” Interview (excite)

April 2010exciteAdded on July 8, 2026

GARNET CROW made their major debut with the simultaneous release of two titles, "Mysterious Eyes," which became the theme song for the TV anime *Detective Conan*, and "君の家に着くまでずっと走ってゆく," and this year marks their tenth anniversary. "Over Drive," the first single released in this memorable anniversary year, has been chosen as the theme song for the film *Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky*, which opens on April 17. Including the TV anime, this is amazingly their ninth time providing a *Detective Conan* theme, but it is their first theme song for a movie! We spoke with Yuri Nakamura, who composed and sings the song, about "Over Drive," which she says was created after reading the script so that no matter where it plays in *Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky*, it will link with the world of the film. AZUKI Nana, who handles lyrics and keyboards, also sent us a comment!

We Receive Many Messages From Conan Fans

-- On April 14, the new single "Over Drive," the theme song for the film *Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky*, will be released. This is your first time for a movie, but including the drama, it is your ninth time providing a theme song for *Detective Conan*. Do you remember the first time you saw your debut song, "Mysterious Eyes," playing as the anime theme?

Yuri Nakamura:Yes, I remember. The first time my own song came from the television, it was embarrassing, but I was very moved.

-- I think many anime fans associate GARNET CROW with Conan theme songs. Do you receive fan letters or messages of support from Conan fans?

Yuri Nakamura:We receive many!! This time too, when it was decided that we would do our first movie theme song, we received many congratulatory messages from Conan fans, such as "We've been waiting!" and "It has finally been decided!" It was a movie theme song after ten years, so I was happy that so many fans were pleased.

-- Did you make the song while being conscious of the *Detective Conan* brand this time?

Yuri Nakamura:Yes. The film staff gave us several keywords, and we made the song along those lines. Since it is a movie set around a "blue sky," a "refreshing wind," "exhilaration," and an "airship," we received a request for a song where people could feel a sense of floating and a feeling of breaking through. We also aimed for a song with a grand scale suitable for a film.

-- When writing the lyrics this time, did you read the film script? How were you conscious of bringing the lyric's worldview close to the film's worldview?

AZUKI Nana: I was allowed to read the script. I wrote while being conscious that no matter which part they used, and no matter what scene the song played in, it would link with the world of the film.

-- Since it is the theme song for an animated film, were there parts where you were conscious of younger listeners, or of the song playing in a movie theater?

Yuri Nakamura:We made it while being conscious of creating a song that would be easy to understand for a wide range of generations. In the singing too, I tried to sing clearly, with as good articulation as possible, so that when people heard it immediately, even small children would understand what I was saying. Also, considering the film's release timing, we finished it as a song that makes you want to run outside without thinking on a fine day, that makes you want to go out. I would be happy if people listen to it under the sun, feeling the wind, while walking or jogging.

Detective Conan Is an Anime I Can Grow Together With

-- If you received an offer as a guest voice actor, would you accept it?

Yuri Nakamura:I would definitely like to participate!

-- By the way, if you could use Conan's wristwatch tranquilizer gun, in what situation and how would you use it?

Yuri Nakamura:When I am too tired to sleep, I would shoot myself! (laughs)

-- Then if you could use the bow-tie voice changer, whose voice would you like to have?

Yuri Nakamura:Asuka's voice from *Evangelion* (Shikinami Asuka Langley)!

-- I see (laughs). Then please tell us what you think is the appeal of *Detective Conan*.

Yuri Nakamura:It is not only a mystery story of solving cases; it also carefully depicts human relationships, such as Ran and Shinichi's romance. Each character is easy to understand, and you want to cheer them on. I think it is an anime you can grow together with.

-- The coupling song "la-la-la それから 1・2・3" has a different charm from "Over Drive," with your singing centered on the mid-low range and an emotional guitar sound. What kind of image was this song made from?

Yuri Nakamura:This is a work we made exactly as we liked, with no restrictions at all. So I think it shows more of what is GARNET-like, or the quirks and individuality of the four members. For this one too, considering the release timing, we finished it as a song that makes you want to run outside without thinking, that makes you want to go out on a fine day. Please listen to it outside the house!

These Ten Years and the Next Ten Years

-- Looking back on these ten years, what was your most memorable event?

Yuri Nakamura:Being able to perform live at Ninna-ji in Kyoto, a World Heritage site. It is not something you can easily do, so it has left a very strong impression.

-- What is the reason you have been able to continue for ten years with the same members?

Yuri Nakamura:Maybe because we were able to keep our own pace? All four of us are people who go our own way (laughs), so conversely, I am grateful to all the staff who have followed us for these ten years!

-- Compared with ten years ago, please tell us if there is anything where you clearly feel you have grown or changed.

Yuri Nakamura:I used to be an extremely negative person, but the other three are relatively positive thinkers, so I too became able to think about various things in a forward-looking way.

-- In the "Diary" on the official site, you have many titles: head of the live-section merchandise department, vice-captain of the live team, vice-leader of the promotion squad, tourism ambassador... (laughs). As one woman, if you were to give a title to Ms. Nakamura when she is with her female friends, what would it be?

Yuri Nakamura:Little bunny (laughs). I will leave the rest to your imagination (laughs).

-- (laughs). The tenth-anniversary commemorative tour has already ended, but please tell us if there are any anniversary events planned from here on.

Yuri Nakamura:I would like to plan various things! Please look forward to them.

-- Ten more years from now, at what pace would you like to continue your artistic activities?

Yuri Nakamura:It would be nice if we could continue our musical activities at our own pace, just as we do now.

-- I look forward to GARNET CROW ten years from now too! Finally, please give a message to those watching Excite Anime.

Yuri Nakamura:Thanks to everyone's support, this year we were able to safely reach the tenth year since our debut. Thank you very much. From now on too, we want to make many songs that will move everyone, so please keep supporting us!
