Little by little... The masterpiece album is taking shape, here we go!! Honestly, this release did not grab me much at first, but I never get tired of it no matter how many times I listen. That is Gane for you.

Would the second album be the one most likely to appeal to the general public? Also, whenever you sing GARNET CROW at karaoke, the screen always turns into *Detective Conan*.

>>22 I know exactly what you mean, lol. You are singing enthusiastically, then Conan appears and your friends look in a completely unrelated direction. It is tragic, lol. For the record, I have been a fan for five years and am still debating whether to buy the album. I think “Maboroshi” is a good one after a long time, but I have not even bought the recent singles.
39
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 01:09 | ID:4c+XCx9VO
I have been a fan for five years too, but I think this is an album you can enjoy normally, like their previous work. The more I listen, the more I hear in it. It is great.
40
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 01:16 | ID:uf2+fSg30
“Anywhere,” “Himawari,” “Yellow Moon,” “Haru Matsu,” and “Weekend” are on another level. I had been keeping the recent single direction (MAR) at arm’s length, but if they can still make songs like these, everything is fine. No wonder it took time to polish carefully; the playing and arrangements are excellent. The guitars especially have a stronger presence this time.
41

>>38 Five years for me too. My honest first impression was: they made something neither good nor bad, but rather ambiguous. Since their previous albums had never made me think that, I honestly wondered whether GARNET CROW had reached its limit. But it turned out to be another one that grows on you. I think it has more depth the more you listen.

>>22 With songs like “Natsu no Maboroshi,” people react, “Ah, I know that one!” I sang it thinking nobody would know it, but I was surprised that quite a few people even knew “Sky Blue.”
45

名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 07:01 | ID:PREbjGq20
Personally, every album has one song I think is the strongest, but this time there is none. The first track draws you in, but then “Maboroshi” arrives with that bouncy, clattering cheerfulness... It would have fit the album better to make this version the single and include the single version on the album.
54
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 07:10 | ID:TEZnsoB50
I have been a fan for five years, and I think it is simply good in the normal way. People who use their fan tenure to say it has gotten worse have probably just grown tired of it or found it does not suit their taste.

I wish they had included “Maboroshi” as a remix version. Why did they not include the single version instead...
63
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 13:00 | ID:FgdRuifSO
Why? Obviously because “Maboroshi” was originally a pre-album single. Its B-side was only “Seichi.” If people know it will be included unchanged on the album, normal people will not buy it.

Why is the limited edition CD jacket a chameleon?
69
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 16:40 | ID:FgdRuifSO
I had the radio on and happened to hear an album feature. They played the full versions of “Eden,” “Hare-dokei,” “Weekend,” and “Maboroshi.” With this much promotion, could this release achieve surprisingly good numbers? I listened to the end with high hopes. It turned out to be a GIZA program... False alarm, orz.
70
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 16:46 | ID:iqORFm/S0
My impressions after buying and listening today as a fan of five months: Nobody seems to mention it much, but “Rusty Rail” is incredible. It is the most moving song I have heard lately. I also think “Haru Matsu Hana no You ni” feels very much like a Conan ending theme. The DVD really is just a bonus, lol, though the older guy looks cool.
71
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 17:14 | ID:VQSucn4pO

72
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 17:14 | ID:DbyKql7D0
“Haru Matsu Hana no You ni” feels like a combination of “Holy Ground,” “Kyou no Kimi to Ashita o Matsu,” and “Yume Mita Ato de.” Are they running out of inspiration?

Is “Marginal Man” modeled on Hidetoshi Nakata? No, I only thought that because of the image of “someone who is not understood” and the phrase “colorful scarf.”
79

The regular customers probably concentrated their purchases on the early-release and first-day sales, so the weekend will decide it. As long as it does not do worse than the previous album, however many copies it sells is fine.

Maybe 50,000 in the first week and 80,000–90,000 total? I still hope it reaches around 100,000... The New Year is coming, so I hope the Gane members can at least earn some mochi money.
86
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 20:18 | ID:vGOTwYiG0
80,000–90,000 seems reasonable. The previous release totaled 64,347 copies, after all.

89
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 20:29 | ID:EoGFzyS3O
“Himawari no Iro” reminded me of Sophia Loren’s film *Sunflower*. Was it inspired by that? Every album track is great, but am I the only one who thinks “Marginal Man” is a masterpiece? The melody is upbeat, yet it makes me want to cry.
90
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 20:49 | ID:YCToXp4w0
They are all just songs sung at the top of their lungs; none of them has a melody that feels beautiful.
91
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 20:50 | ID:KFO9Q6C40
Surprisingly, quite a few people call “Marginal Man” a masterpiece. Honestly, at first I thought they were all slow songs with boring melodies. But it grew on me. The melody is not boring. I like it, and it is different from previous GARNET CROW.
92
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 20:50 | ID:gjMvHiwZ0

93
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 20:56 | ID:YCToXp4w0
The booklet: It is fine to omit the final chorus of “Hare-dokei,” but they should at least have printed everything up to the C section...
94
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 20:58 | ID:TEZnsoB50

名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 21:03 | ID:QY57mo7F0

>>85-86 It will not sell that much. Even Kuraki only sold 130,000; half of that would not be much different from the previous album.
98
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 21:15 | ID:aKabxAnRO
>>97 Kuraki has fallen too... But Gane is still more stable, so I think it is too early to say.
99
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 21:16 | ID:g6aOCs1A0
(´^ิ ౪^ิ)... “Himawari no Iro” is god-tier.
100
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 21:17 | ID:eucCArWy0
Maybe somewhere above Aina and around AYA KAMIKI’s level? Aina sold 50,000; AYA KAMIKI sold 64,000.
101
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/06 21:20 | ID:vGOTwYiG0
>>97 What >>98 said is the same as above, but I will say it anyway. GARNET CROW is different from Kuraki; it is almost entirely supported by its core fans. There will also be general listeners, casual users, and people who delayed buying because of “Maboroshi,” so it is not impossible. Since there are two versions, it should not be much worse than the previous album; in other words, momentum has not fallen that much. Realistically, though, it will probably be under 80,000. >>100 AYA KAMIKI should beat that, right? Her previous release sold 64,000 after all.

I have listened to it many times, and this really feels like a masterpiece. It is on the same level as, or even above, their previous work. “Himawari” is an almost irrecoverably depressing song if you listen while thinking about Van Gogh.

“Haru Matsu Hana no You ni” should have been changed to something like “Waiting for the Summer Cicada.” It waits underground for summer for years, finally emerges, and then dies immediately! That would make it an incredibly depressing song.

Someone reposted a report saying that a December 6 release, title undecided, will be fully produced by GARNET CROW: lyrics by AZUKI Nana, music by Yuri Nakamura, arrangement by Hiroto Furui, and guitar by Hitoshi Okamoto. It also lists “Kaze to RAINBOW,” a GARNET CROW song with a *MÄR Heaven* opening tie-up, plus a cover for Saeka Uura’s second single, making four tracks in total. Some details are omitted. (Assuming this is not a hoax.) A produced song with a major tie-up too... Are they really going to include a cover by a newcomer named Saeka Uura? Does that mean they will produce her songs?

Correction: Saeka Uura will release singles for two consecutive months. The December 6 release will be fully produced by GARNET CROW, with lyrics by AZUKI Nana, music by Yuri Nakamura, arrangement by Hiroto Furui, and guitar by Hitoshi Okamoto. There is a major tie-up in progress. That line was included earlier too.

>>121 They are a creator collective to begin with. They have been treading water for six years without much progress, and they lack buzz, so perhaps they are having a newcomer sing it. Saeka Uura’s debut song was produced by B’z’s Inaba. If Gane provides the second wave of support, it seems promising. Gane has many songs that reward repeated listening: B’z’s core fans can give her debut a boost, and Gane’s skill can retain them. Now I feel like we can look forward to a masterpiece.

I think Hiroto Furui is a god. About three years ago during the New Year holidays, I went with my parents to Ossan’s family okonomiyaki restaurant in Tokyo. While the three of us were eating around the griddle, Ossan suddenly came through the door wearing Italian-style clothes completely out of place in an okonomiyaki restaurant. He said, “The usual,” and was about to go upstairs when a group of high-school students began shouting, “Ossan!” and “Ossan, you are so cool!” He came back down and held an impromptu autograph session. All thirteen or fourteen customers there had him sign the restaurant’s colored paper. When he learned that the students were from the soccer club at his old school, he chatted with them with a wonderful smile. After saying, “See you later,” he went upstairs and the restaurant became quiet again. My parents and I were excited by his friendly, cool manner as we finished eating. When we went to pay, the waitress—his younger sister—pointed upstairs and said, “He paid everyone’s bill today. Please come again.” I was genuinely shocked.

I think Marginal Man is a god. About three years ago during the New Year holidays, I went with my parents to Marginal Man’s family okonomiyaki restaurant in Tokyo. Marginal Man came in wearing a colorful scarf completely out of place in the restaurant. High-school students shouted his name and said he was cool, so he held an impromptu autograph session. He chatted with them after learning they were from the soccer club at his old school. He went upstairs, and when we finished eating, his sister told us he had paid everyone’s bill. That colorful scarf truly shocked me.

I listened to the whole album three times. Yellow Moon is probably number one. It would be amazing as a TV-drama insert song, or on Tamori’s Music Station. But I cannot agree that this album is “dried squid.” The songs are all immediately pleasant to hear, so it is not dried squid. I generally think dried-squid songs are more common in hard rock.

A reposted album review says the record is very deep and needs repeated listening, preserves something distinctly GARNET CROW, has some awkward track transitions, lacks enough dynamic contrast in the second half, and would benefit from more falsetto singing by Yurippe. The reviewer’s immediate favorites are “Rusty Rail,” “Kakurenbo,” “Himawari no Iro,” “Haru Matsu Hana no You ni,” and “WEEKEND.” They call “WEEKEND” the masterpiece, though its outro is too short, and say repeated listening will reveal the familiar GARNET CROW and turn the album into a classic. They also joke that the group photo in the regular-edition lyric booklet makes Yurippe look short compared with the others, roughly Ossan > Nana > Mochi > Yurippe.

Why are you all trying so hard? You can reject the troll’s opinion completely and retreat into your own shell if you want, but could you stop criticizing other people’s sensibilities? Music is a form of art, and everyone experiences it differently. Some call Picasso a genius; others call it elementary-school doodling. I think this is a bad album, so to me it is a bad album. If someone else calls it a stroke of genius, then to that person it is a stroke of genius. Does it really bother you that I called this album bad? You are all rather pathetic.

Lately, GARNET CROW has become “songs where the lyrics are easy to hear = good songs” to me. In that sense, there are many parts of this album where the words are hard to make out, so it does not work for me. “Hare-dokei” is clear enough. I wish she would sing more distinctly. I am dissatisfied with quite a few things on this album too, especially the second half. There seem to be too many changes of intensity within each song, making the whole album tiring to hear straight through. It feels as if the songs cancel out one another’s strengths. In terms of its sounds, the album version of “Maboroshi” makes me want to call it “techno jazz” or “electronica jazz.” Maybe this arrangement is filtering out the younger fans attracted by the MÄR tie-up. I think GARNET CROW has excellent fans supporting them. Perhaps it is their unique worldview; their distinctive music captivates people. I have rented their albums and listened, but I cannot understand what is good about them. “Maboroshi” makes me think, “Well... it is okay,” and that is about it. Is this simply music whose appeal some people can never understand? Even when everyone here calls a song a masterpiece, I cannot keep up. There must be many people like me, which is why that is not reflected in sales. Is it not unfair to criticize people who keep talking about sales? Perhaps it is the voices (vocal timbre and instrument tones), the melodies, lyrics with a unique worldview, and arrangements that amplify all of those things. The beginning of “Anywhere” is cool, but the sudden childish-sounding rise in her voice at “busou sae~” is a shame. If it were the old Yurippe, I feel she would sing it more coldly.

>>513 Composition mainly means creating the melody: adding chords, rhythmic changes, passing tones, melodic variations, and phrase patterns. Arrangement adds various sounds to that melody—brass, programmed parts, rhythm section, harmonies, and so on—to establish the style and genre of the original. That is a very rough explanation, though.
526
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/08 19:08 | ID:wIh5n56m0

It is a shame that the intro of the album version of “Maboroshi” was used in such a poor arrangement. It simply does not suit “Maboroshi.” Used on a song that was uniformly heavy and cold, that intro’s distinctive floating quality would have worked very well.

This thread is overreacting to negative opinions and arguing too much. Why not simply treat it as “the opinion of someone interested in GARNET” and move on? Positive opinions are rarely argued either; people just say, “X is a masterpiece,” or “X is the best,” based on feeling. It is strange to demand evidence only from negative opinions.

>>750 I do not think this album is good either. Every song is sung in a strained style, and the melodies rely on that strained part. The heavy and more pop-oriented songs also resemble one another, so there is little variety. They are all songs that force you to feel their “power.” (There were already enough powerful songs among “Yume Hanabi,” “Eden,” and “Rai Rai Ya,” right?) It is tiring to listen to, and the mysterious quality used in its promotion is less present here than ever. On the other hand, it might be a good album for people who dislike flashy arrangements.

5th >>> Best-of >>> 4th >>> 3rd >>> 2nd >>> 1st. Although their early work had obvious immature and unreliable parts, I think they have steadily grown. The change brought by this album is not just the result of two years passing; it is evolution. That must shock quite a few people. I think this is the weakest album GARNET has made. The reasons are probably: ・All nine songs feel like throwaways. ・Not one song made me want to listen a second time. Instead of including nine throwaways, they should have included five or six songs as usual and raised the quality. Personally: 1st > 2nd = 4th > 3rd = 5th. I think current GARNET has lost its shine, and I probably will not experience again soon the feeling I had when I first heard the first album seven years ago. How is that? This person who is bad at writing essays tried.

I would also prefer fewer songs, but I would like each song to be shorter too. There are not many short songs this time. For example, “Himawari” repeats the chorus too much; one verse followed by one chorus would have been enough.

I actually prefer the blunt wording: “Honestly, this is the worst album in GARNET history. All nine songs feel like throwaways. Not one makes me want to listen twice. They should have included only five or six songs and improved the quality. 1st > 2nd = 4th >>> 3rd = 5th. The current GARNET has lost its shine, and I will never again feel what I felt when I heard the first album seven years ago.” That is better than the milder version saying it is a decent album but lacks mystery. At least the blunt version allows a direct confrontation.

Maybe the members are getting older. There have been more kayōkyoku-like songs in recent years. As people say, the songs have lost their mystery, and I loved Gane’s mysterious songs. On the previous album they seemed to like minor-key songs such as “Yuuzukiyo” and “Tsumetai Kage,” but I did not want that direction to drag into this release. “Himawari,” “Yume Hanabi,” “Yellow Moon,” and “Rai Rai Ya” all feel old-fashioned. Still, I think a generation nostalgic for that style will like them.

The large number of kayōkyoku-like songs is getting a little tiring. But I love “Himawari,” especially its beautiful lyrics. Perhaps the problem is that she has not yet learned to use her singing styles distinctly. She even uses enka-style turns in fast songs, which can sound tacky. Sometimes the voice is emotional, sometimes tearing, sometimes sorrowful, sometimes powerful. If she could distinguish and use those styles, both core fans and the general public would enjoy it. Her recent sorrowful voice—thin and transparent—has become less common, so I want to hear it. Does GIZA have no strategy of releasing that kind of song as a single to bring back listeners who are drifting away? Not if they only care about MÄR~. Nakamura also seems to want to make more rock-oriented work in the future... It is difficult. In short, “Please spare us MÄR.”

The poster may not realize they are provoking people, but if they want to exchange opinions with other fans, they should restrain behavior that needlessly irritates others. Unnecessarily calling people ignorant or fanatics is not good either. People who do that make you wonder whether they have some kind of intellectual superiority complex. Regarding this album, residents are mainly discussing the strained singing style. That should first be raised as a question: if you think it is bad, explain what you dislike before making a categorical judgment. Perhaps the style is intended to achieve a particular effect. I say this because I only check the thread periodically, and each refresh produces a huge pile of replies, most of them strange mutual provocation. There have been more than 200 replies in six hours today. Casual conversation would be fine, but pointless back-and-forth insults are simply obstructive from a third party’s perspective—whether you are the baiter or the person who bites. >>669 Rather than since MÄR, I would say the last two or three months, perhaps since summer. More people have been responding to bait-like posts. Maybe people who do not usually visit came here around the album release. >>813 That is true, but this is a place where trolls and thread disruptors are relatively uncommon. If we establish some basic rules, it should not become a lawless zone.

No, no... I was writing a piece about training personnel for a sewage-treatment bureau, so I could not follow the thread at all, lol. >>875 Come to think of it, this is the first time the work’s genre has been labeled “J-pop.” Perhaps he was concerned that the original loneliness and emptiness in the song structure had disappeared. The backing riffs, solos, and guitar sound with strong imagery and impact take up more space, while the more accessible melodies, flashy synths, and smooth piano sounds are reduced. Overall, the style feels solemn, grand, and powerful. (・∀・)/~~~

There are almost no songs that make you say, “What is this?” Every song feels as though it falls within expectations. Sonically, as several people have said, it lacks the mysterious quality that only GARNET used to have. In that sense, it is not very interesting. Everyone says it gets better and better the more they listen, but for me the fifth album feels less like it “transforms” with repeated listening and more like I simply get used to it. Their older songs generally transformed as I listened... Everyone says this album is good, but it makes me sad that this is the only way I can enjoy it. I will listen to it more for now.

Do not bump the thread. Newcomers should lurk for six months. That is basic.

When I first heard this band, honestly I only noticed the distinctive low end. I did not think much of the songs themselves, so I did not like them very much. After several listens, that low end became comfortable, and I noticed the extensive use of falsetto. Most importantly, the lyrics carry a melancholy and sorrow that sink into the heart. I have finally realized what makes this band special. Even in today’s music scene, I think they are an unusual band that clearly stands apart from others.

>>944 It might be lower than the previous release. Even 35,500 would be rounded to 36,000, lol. But single sales have fallen more sharply than the previous release, so with only one edition it surely would have fallen below 30,000. The multiple editions seem to have barely saved it. I never thought it would greatly surpass the previous release in the first place.

What is falsetto?

I checked the regular edition’s position on the Bunkyodo rankings, and it is doing terribly. Even with only one edition, I think it would not have fallen below 30,000.

>>939 No, I interpret it more as a song in which a bad woman looks spitefully at the man who kept waiting after his lover left, saying, “I will come back later.” Am I overinterpreting it?
962
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/10 14:50 | ID:xEPT2pm/0
Put simply, falsetto means a head voice.

The guitar afterglow at the end does have a dark feeling, and I can understand transitioning from there into “tee-ah-moh.” But the overall flow from “Rusty Rail” into “Yume Hanabi” is terrible.

GIZA only needs one fake-Latin act, Kitahara. Speaking of Kitahara, I heard an ending theme for *MÄR* included a song credited as her own composition. It was arranged by Hiroto Furui too. I have had enough Latin style.

Is falsetto basically raising the voice upward? The wiki at >>970 says it is common during the voice-change period.

They will mention it again on *Mezamashi* tomorrow, right? “GARNET CROW, introduced in last week’s feature, entered the chart at number four!” If they are lucky, the PV might flash by too.
988
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/10 20:51 | ID:rTRGeaR30
Since they already interviewed them for *Mezamashi*, if the intention was to promote them there, releasing the album tomorrow and getting a slightly higher ranking would attract more attention. That would also be better for *Mezamashi*, would it not?
989
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/10 20:51 | ID:WtPUskJ+0
Maybe they will appear as guests on *Mezamashi* someday and sing a few lines. Then everyone would start school and work depressed first thing in the morning.

992
名無しさん@お腹いっぱい。 | 2006/10/10 21:04 | ID:rTRGeaR30
Morning shows would not choose a depressing song in the first place. That is the fundamental point I have to object to.
