Congratulations on reviving the Yuri-Nana thread! And then it immediately turned into this again. How bored are you? lol

Reporting it to the moderators is pointless; just block him. The intro to “Love is a Bird” is incredible. It brings to mind a beautiful sky at dusk after the rain has passed. The scenery opens up all at once. When the synth lead and synth strings are combined, the old man is unbeatable.

All that remains is to choose the percussion-programming sounds a little more carefully. Compared with other bands, the drums are obviously weak… lol. Still, I think this time’s fills are better than usual.

It would be fine if the arrangements merely leaned toward guitar, but having a guitar solo in every single song is unnecessary.

Even if the goal is to add variety, I do not think that saxophone leaves such a different impression. If it is only added subtly during the instrumental break, wouldn’t a guitar solo do just as well?

Can’t they remove the consciousness of being a “band” from the members?

They should work toward being able to remove it.

Not the members so much as the old man.

That is the original lineup, after all. Rather than forcing it to sound like a band, I want them to do things only that lineup can achieve.

For example, they could take advantage of having two keyboards: piano and synthesizer.

They should make pop music with a dreamy, dramatic post-rock direction. In short, if they rely only on that lineup, they need to avoid parts that absolutely require drums and bass, or at least choose programmed-drum sounds carefully. The biggest reason they were praised early on but criticized so harshly now is whether the programming fits. If this release used live instruments throughout, it would probably be well received.

I remember the old man saying in a magazine that this release would have a more band-like feel. Since he said “this time,” perhaps the next one will take a different direction. Personally, I want to hear another dreamy, dramatic song like Miguel used to make.

Rather than saying “like a band,” please use support musicians properly. Old man, lol. It is an extravagant wish, but I would love Cyber to reach the level of a co-creator rather than merely GARNET CROW’s producer.

Piano sounds are already a normal part of a synthesizer’s palette. Splitting the keyboards into synth and piano parts is meaningless unless the music is technically demanding enough to justify it. I feel like we have discussed this before.

AZUKI Nana has that position because she writes the lyrics and handles the visual image. Honestly, GARNET CROW’s music does not really need two keyboards. It would be nice if Nana could play drums or something. For programmed drums, I wish they could make a snare with the punch of “A CROWN.”

Okay! I am getting tired of people disrupting the thread too. By the way, Nana is probably the closest to the listeners. Since she can listen to things like “The First Cry” and say, “We cannot do without this,” perhaps she can listen more objectively because she does not participate in the sound production; she may already be half in the producer’s position.

She listens to demos repeatedly in order to write lyrics, so she probably hears them differently from listeners. Around “The Color of Sunflower,” she said something like, “This is the orthodox style; I already loved it at the demo stage.” Once the arrangement, added sounds, and mixing are finished, she may be able to hear it with the freshest ears.

I nearly took a wrong step during yesterday’s Arakawaoki Station stabbing incident, so I am stopping by… lol. I have already blocked him, so there is no problem. Every time I come home from work and see nothing but transparent replies, it drains me. Today, though, I am at home.

The workflow is probably: composition demo (Yuri Nakamura) → lyrics (AZUKI) → vocal recording (Nakamura); sound design (Hiroto Furui) and guitar recording (Hitoshi Okamoto) → revisions and corrections, including rewritten lyrics or arrangements → engineer’s adjustments. Is the piano AZUKI Nana’s part?

Honestly, I do not think two guitars are necessary; I want bass and drums. Kurumaya’s drumming is too strong. The old man has added variety to this release, but the sound choices are a little questionable. I still hope for something with the feel of “A CROWN.”

I like arrangements in the style of “The World Turns, They Say.” There has been less piano lately because AZUKI Nana has started playing it herself (to make things easier)? I used to think Miguel and the old man played it.

The old man’s beautiful pad sounds in “The World Turns…” are still better. They feel like the rain has stopped and light is shining down from the sky. Both the phrase writing and the recorded sound feel very much like the old man. Interviews discuss his programming and overall arrangements, but never mention Nana’s piano; whether synthesizer or piano, the old man could probably do both to that level.

I do not know exactly when it started, but I think I once read that Nana has been playing piano recently.

In a recent magazine, the old man said AZUKI played the piano and he came up with the guitar phrases. That is what he said himself.

Even the guitar riffs are by the old man, lol. It is unusual for an arranger to create the riffs too. Here is another fact that makes us question Mochi’s guitar technique even more, lol.

Didn’t the old man just make a rough draft first? Judging from the god-tier solo in “Sunflower,” the old man’s contribution feels substantial. The claim that AZUKI played the piano is surprising, but I do not think a professional magazine like Sound Designer would lie.

I have always thought the old man was a genius at arranging leads and synth strings, but if he also has a feel for riffs, that is astonishing, lol. Wouldn’t that make the old man practically a god? As for the guitar, I still want to believe he only offered a few suggestions.

Wasn’t Sound Designer the feature with Yurippe and the old man talking? It apparently said that even the guitar phrases were programmed first and the guitar was recorded afterward. Nana’s name was mentioned, but Mochi’s name was not mentioned once; that feels a little sad.

The old man also chooses the chorus, delay, and effects sounds. The chorus guitar in “Eien ni Houmure,” which everyone here praises, may have been his idea too. Since it was an early song, they may have relied more heavily on the experienced old man.

April issue of SOUND DESIGNER. Nakamura makes the compositions, then gives demos to lyricist AZUKI Nana and arranger Hiroto Furui. Sometimes lyrics are added after the arrangement, and sometimes they are written almost simultaneously. Furui says the final programmed parts are prepared during arranging; only instruments that need to be played by hand are recorded in the studio and then substituted in. Nakamura starts with piano, melody, and chords, then makes a rough arrangement; drum loops, strings, and distorted guitar may also be added from a keyboard.

Conclusion: Mochi is unnecessary.

Nakamura decides the chord progression and overall atmosphere; the old man works out the specific sounds and phrases on that basis. Yurippe is amazing, but since she has said that arrangements sometimes surprise her, the old man’s influence seems stronger.

Does “only the instruments that need to be played by hand are recorded and then substituted” really mean exactly that? Are all the phrases handed to the old man? Perhaps Mochi handles the riff rhythm while the old man handles the solos, with some changes based on Mochi’s ideas. He is a professional guitarist, so surely he handles details like effect selection too. You are underestimating him, lol. The posts mention that arrangers sometimes adjust effects for groups such as ZONE and Whiteberry.
