PV Filming Report!!

GARNET CROW's new single “Yume・Hanabi” was just released on July 5. The music video, which expands the song's imagery even further, is a must-see, and some of you may already have watched it. This issue brings you a report on the video shoot by the staff. You may discover something new that was not apparent from the video itself!

■Filming YURI's lip-sync scene■

This is the scene that also appears in the PV: “YURI sings in a meadow.” On set, this kind of scene is called a “lip scene” (lip meaning mouth or lips). For this shoot, the song is actually played on location while the artist sings along, and the footage is filmed. Incidentally, the people with their heads inside the curtain in the far left corner are not suspicious characters (laughs). They are darkening the area so they can view the monitor used for checking the footage and carefully scrutinize the exact colors!

■Taking direction from the director■

You can almost hear someone saying, “Please walk from here to there and give us an expression!” This is AZUKI and Furui receiving directions from the director. On set, the director conveys the image to the artists and, sometimes exchanging opinions with them, turns the picture in their heads into reality. Only when the shot perfectly matches the director's image can everyone finally hear, “Okay! Cut!” Incidentally, everyone is holding umbrellas because it was cloudy and then rainy that day, and a light rain had begun to fall. (After this shoot ended, the rain suddenly came pouring down as if it had been waiting for us!)

■Filming Furui's image shots■

This is Furui. As you can probably tell if you watch the video, he is also someone who can instantly express the mood of a song. There are lots of cool shots, so Furui fans should not miss it (laughs). Camera work is not only about filming from close up! Sometimes, as here, the crew shoots from a distance, as if from another room, or changes the brightness and uses blur to create footage with various textures. Camera work is also very important in expressing a song!

■All members together■

All the GARNET CROW members are together! This is also called an “image shot,” and it is a very difficult task in which the members must express the world of the song through their expressions and atmosphere. At the same time, including this scene in the PV plays an important role in greatly expanding the song's world. Looking at it this way, you can see the members' concentration directed toward the camera as they try to express the poignancy, strength, and fragility of “Yume・Hanabi.” It is not enough simply to stand there!

■Filming AZUKI's image shots■

Now we move to a scene filmed in an abandoned factory, where we see AZUKI's image shots. In the meadow scene, the members seemed to be sending a message toward the camera; this time, they express themselves through movement, sitting in a chair and standing up. You may think that sitting or walking is “easy!” but being told to do it “normally and naturally” makes it surprisingly difficult! The moment you are being filmed, it is no longer normal (laughs). But AZUKI is AZUKI. She gave a smooth OK after only a few takes!

GARNET CROW has just released the single “Yume・Hanabi” on July 5, and will release the new single “Koyoi Eden no Katasumi de” as soon as August 16! This song is currently airing as the ending theme for the TV Tokyo anime “MÄR.” As the song was written after YURI NAKAMURA was inspired by a period when she listened to 1970s Western pop, it is an unusually direct, catchy, and energetic number for GARNET CROW.

★Three consecutive monthly single releases
Third release: “Maboroshi,” September 6!!
After releasing “Koyoi Eden no Katasumi de” on August 16, GARNET CROW will release “Maboroshi,” its third consecutive monthly single, on September 6! The song was originally written for the next album, but it caught the ear of the program staff for TV Asahi's Thursday Mystery series “Shin Kasouken no Onna,” which was using it as a tie-in. It was chosen as the program's theme song and quickly turned into a single.
