GARNET CROW’s first coupling-song best album has been assembled from all the B-sides released between their debut single “Mysterious Eyes” and their latest single “Misty Mystery,” with the track selection based on fan requests. We spoke with vocalist Yuri Nakamura by email about the album, presenting an introduction to every song along the way.

Q1: First, please tell us your impressions of the countdown concert!
Yuri Nakamura (hereafter Nakamura): It was fun!

Q2: This coupling-song best album was selected based on requests from fans. What did you think about the songs that were chosen—the songs that proved popular?
Nakamura: I thought it was interesting that the songs we like and the songs our fans like are slightly different.

Q3: Why did you decide to release a best album collecting your coupling songs (C/W songs)?
Nakamura: A lot of fans like our C/W songs, so we thought we should create an opportunity for people to hear them collected together. We also want many more people to hear them.

Q4: I think *GOODBYE LONELY ~Bside collection~* is a wonderful title. What made you settle on it?
Nakamura: Since the C/W songs were finally getting the chance to see the light of day as a single collection, we chose it with the feeling of, “Our C/W songs, you’re not lonely anymore, are you?” We also wanted listeners to fill in “lonely heart,” “lonely days,” or whatever else the word brings to mind for them after “lonely,” say goodbye to negative feelings, and make a happy new start.

Q5: Is there a song on this album that holds a particularly strong personal meaning for you? Please tell us why.
Nakamura: “Yofuke no Ryuuseitachi.” I remember struggling because the chorus was very difficult.

Q6: With all these coupling songs gathered together, the album feels like one work that lets us immerse ourselves in GARNET CROW’s deeper musical world, just as your albums do. What do you think?
Nakamura: Many of these songs were made without being bound by various conditions, so I think they may let people get to know our deeper world.

Q7: The lineup spans songs from the early days of your debut through recent work. Does that give you any particular thoughts? Personally, I felt that even if one of your early songs were released now as a “new song,” it would not feel dated at all. That evergreen quality is exactly what makes GARNET CROW’s music so appealing, I thought again!
Nakamura: It was interesting to see what music we had been into and listening to a lot at the time, and what kinds of songs we wanted to make. Some of the chorus work is elaborate, while some songs were deliberately kept simple, so I thought, “I was considering all sorts of things in my own way” (laughs).

Q8: How did you decide on the order of the songs?
Nakamura: We arranged them by feel.

Q9: There are a lot of tracks, and on top of that, the first-press limited edition is a lavish package with a 10-song Music Clip collection! Were the Music Clips selected from the members’ favorite works?
Nakamura: Yes.

Q10: The first-press limited edition also seems to include an illustrated jacket newly drawn by Hirara Natsume.
Nakamura: It is an illustration with a wistful, gentle feeling. Of course, she drew us.

Q11: 2012 has begun. What kind of year would you like it to be for GARNET CROW? And is there anything you personally would like to challenge yourself with, or any hopes for the year?
Nakamura: I would like to spend time taking in various things too—watching films, plays, and live shows. Then I want to use what I absorb in making songs again.
