A “song of joy” played by the times

Let us begin with a famous composer’s words: “Japanese people are like eating ice cream while wearing geta.”

It is the ultimate fusion of East and West. When you think about it, it is perfectly natural. A worldview like this exists casually in our everyday lives, and no one finds it strange.

Another famous composer once said: “Writing a sad song when you are sad is terribly unfair. The greatest satisfaction for a composer comes from writing a song that makes people happy precisely when they are sad.” In other words, he meant that sadness is not an emotion we should make others bear with us.

GARNET CROW’s second single, “二人のロケット,” seems to allow these two worldviews, so different at first glance, to coexist. Think of the hit songs that colored the 1980s: they refined a world of “artifice” to the utmost. It is precisely because that world is so thoroughly realized that listeners can comfortably surrender themselves to it. Is that not what a true classic quality means? Then what does their other world—their lyrics—look like?

To put it in a way that risks being misunderstood: “a dramatic life”... What an unreal-sounding phrase. Everyone has their own circumstances, and the unremarkable days that pass quietly are a kind of drama too. Familiar streets, the station you always use, a tiny spoonful of joy and sorrow, and the bubbles of each day vanishing one after another. A small universe formed in a one-room apartment: an original story belonging to one person alone.

Even before their debut, GARNET CROW had reached the upper ranks of the Kyoto α-STATION chart, and their debut single also performed well. The world of lyrics they depict makes you feel that it was born precisely from such ordinary days. Every day, each of us searches for some kind of “sparkle.” That way of living, as if perpetually stuck in the preparation stage and never quite moving on to the next step, is actually something we all share, is it not? Their light, gentle sensibility is just right for such everyday life, while their carefully balanced, pleasing groove keeps repeating.

In the end, people spend each day simply trying to live. Between small hopes and small despairs, all kinds of feelings are born, and those feelings too can become “songs of joy.” Even without realizing it, everyone unconsciously searches for songs filled with small joys. Perhaps that is why each era gives birth to classic songs that remain with us.

The second single soon to be released, “二人のロケット,” is one such song. It is peaceful, and it is happy. Is that not quite enough?
