On April 14, the release date of GARNET CROW's first single of 2010, “Over Drive,” a release event was held at the main stage of LaLaport Toyosu. As the theme song for the theatrical film [Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky], the event featured a collaboration between Detective Conan and GARNET CROW. Here is our report.

On April 14, in the middle of spring, a large crowd had gathered around LaLaport Toyosu's main stage. It was the release day of GARNET CROW's new single “Over Drive,” the theme song for the film [Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky]. It was also the day Kaitou Kid had announced, “I will come to claim the new song ‘Over Drive’ on April 14.” Since the notice had appeared everywhere from GARNET CROW's official website to newspapers, the people gathered at the venue looked intensely curious about what would happen.

Inside a black box set up to the left of the stage were CDs of “Over Drive,” guarded closely by two large, intimidating security officers. At 4 p.m., while the ominous atmosphere still hung in the air, the host called Conan onto the stage. When GARNET CROW followed, cheers and applause rose from the venue. As in the “Over Drive” music video, the members were dressed for summer ahead of the season. After Conan introduced them, the mini-live began.

The first song was “Yume Mita Ato de.” As the audience focused on the stage, Nakamura's clear voice and fragile melody spread through the venue, drawing everyone at once into GARNET CROW's musical world. Because it was outdoors, the audience could enjoy a sensation different from hearing the song in a regular concert hall. By the time Nakamura finished singing and greeted everyone with, “Hello, everyone, we're GARNET CROW. Thank you for coming in such large numbers today,” the crowd had grown even larger. The sky was overcast and the air a little chilly, but she offered the reassuring comment that “from a garnet point of view, it's sunny.” For a song that suited sunshine, they performed “Natsu no Maboroshi.” When Nakamura kept the rhythm on a red tambourine, the audience began clapping and the lively rhythm spread through the venue. Furui's gestures naturally grew larger, and Okamoto's sharply ringing guitar made it clear that the excitement was building. During the MC that followed, each member shared a few words. They spoke in a relaxed atmosphere about what it meant to reach their 10th anniversary and how they felt about the event. Then the conversation turned to the new song “Over Drive.” GARNET CROW had previously had songs used as opening and ending themes for the TV series, but this was their first time providing a theatrical film theme, so Nakamura spoke about the production story. She said they had imagined an airship floating in a blue sky and Ran's single-minded feelings for Shinichi while making “Over Drive.” As the time came to perform it, Conan appeared to protect the new song from the theft Kaitou Kid had announced. After a talk about [Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky], Conan introduced the song and “Over Drive” began. A solemn opening rang out before the song suddenly picked up the tempo. The audience's clapping grew louder, and as the sense of unity increased, AZUKI's enjoyment of the rhythm while playing made a strong impression. During the chorus, the audience waved their hands from side to side, just as they would at a regular concert. Since it is rare for the members to perform a new song live on its release day, both the members and event attendees seemed to savor this special moment.

Just when it seemed the event would end safely, Kaitou Kid's voice rang out through the venue and an airship appeared behind the stage. On the airship were the words “I have certainly claimed GARNET CROW's new song ‘Over Drive’,” Kaitou Kid's mark, and a mysterious QR code. While everyone was distracted by the airship, the CD that had been under heavy guard disappeared. Cards scattered around the venue also bore Kaitou Kid's mark and the mysterious QR code. The message, “This is a treasure I was fortunate enough to obtain. I shall share it with everyone,” was a surprise gift: accessing the QR code allowed people to download “Over Drive” as a ringtone.

This was the first time all four members had appeared together at an event outside a concert venue, and it even included a collaboration with Detective Conan. The photo session with Conan and GARNET CROW was also a rare opportunity, allowing fans to see expressions from the members that were different from usual. At the CD-purchase event that followed, where the members handed posters directly to buyers, the line of participants stretched a long way and continued until dark. Having celebrated their 10th anniversary and entered their 11th year, GARNET CROW continues to pursue and advance its own musical identity. We will be watching them closely in the years ahead.
