Behind the Scenes of the Shoots

No. 1: “涙のイエスタデー”

This song was GARNET CROW’s milestone 100th work. We decided that instead of dressing the occasion up too formally, we would build the excitement like a small festival, and came up with the idea of making a jacket with a slightly different feel from their previous ones. Until then, there had been many photographs of the members with cool expressions, but since this was a commemorative CD, we decided to photograph them smiling and create a design resembling a Beatles 45 rpm record. While we were working on that, the director suggested, “For the PV, too, I’d like to turn the jacket’s atmosphere directly into video.” We then thought it would be interesting to film the members performing in a setting inspired by American television programs from around the 1960s.

Rather than making the whole PV consist simply of performance footage, we invited a foreign host to appear and added juggling, which made it brighter and more cheerful. As a result, the set was filled with smiles throughout the shoot, the members looked relaxed, and I think we captured some very good footage. GARNET CROW often wear outfits with a rather chic image, but this time we wanted to make things as colorful as possible, so each member wore a different, brightly colored outfit.

No. 2: “Over Drive”

We began with the idea that we wanted to express the song’s refreshing image in the video as well. GARNET CROW tends to be associated with a weighty, mellow sound, but for this work I wanted to take the image in a more poppy and lighthearted direction. The video features a number of small windows, each opening onto a different world. According to the director, these windows were inspired by Doraemon’s “Anywhere Door.” In fact, he had come to see [GARNET CROW Happy 10th Anniversary livescope 2010 〜THE BEST TOUR〜], and apparently the idea came from the stage production he saw there. It also led to an interesting way of presenting the members using those doors.

No. 3: “夢みたあとで”

The performance scenes were filmed at a club in Osaka called [Grand Cafe]. At the time, the members were not yet accustomed to live performance, but once filming began, Nakamura’s innocent, fresh expression was so appealing that both the cameraman and I got carried away saying, “Let’s shoot more close-ups of Nakamura!” We changed the original plan as we went along. AZUKI also brought out her distinctive worldview, and we were able to capture some excellent performance footage.

There are also scenes of Nakamura and AZUKI walking through falling “cherry blossoms,” but those flowers were actually plum blossoms. It was still too early in the season for the cherry trees to be in bloom (laughs). Since the lyrics include “a rain of flowers is falling,” we wanted to include scenes that evoked that kind of atmosphere. We reduced the number of frames in those scenes to give them a film-like texture.

No. 4: “花は咲いて ただ揺れて”

This PV uses flowers shimmering gently on the surface of the water as its key visual. As the reader survey also showed, Nakamura singing directly into the camera is especially beautiful and memorable. In addition, the two men, Okamoto and Furui, look incredibly cool in their slightly disheveled suits, with a somewhat wild air about them, so I hope you will be sure to check it out.

No. 5: “As the Dew”

Nakamura gave us the keywords “urban” and “city-like.” The PV had initially been developed around a completely different image, but the song was made between [GARNET CROW livescope 2009 〜夜明けのSoul] and [GARNET CROW Happy 10th Anniversary livescope 2010 〜THE BEST TOUR〜], so the members were riding high on the feeling of “live!” We quickly rented a warehouse and filmed the performance scenes in a firm, cool atmosphere. To evoke the city, we used sirens and neon lights reflected on wet ground. I also remember that it was incredibly cold during this shoot (laughs).
