It seems like that sort of thing should've been discussed during rehearsal. It's not karaoke, so just signaling the staff won't change the key of the performance, right? Maybe she's adjusting the volume of the in-ear monitors she's wearing.

I've often heard that raising or lowering your hand makes it easier to sing higher or lower. To think that means she's giving the staff directions... I can only conclude that person's brain is infested with worms.

It's 100% about adjusting the monitor mix. What the audience hears and what the performers hear are completely different. Only Yurippe knows how loud it sounds to her. Even little things can change during the actual show, so she has to signal them to turn it up or down. For a small venue like a live house, maybe, but GARNET sets the BPM when Hirohito Furui arranges the songs and sends it to the drummer, doesn't she...? I've never heard of changing the tempo by raising and lowering your hand.

Compared with the period up through the second album, I'm one of those people who feels the B-sides have gotten weaker. On songs like “his voyage” and “Mawarimichi,” the build-up before the chorus feels too abrupt, and I don't really like it. The *Mellow* era has a strong anime-song image, but “Yume Hanabi” and “Eden” tightly condensed their earlier style. “Atsumete! Mel-Heaven” also had lyrics connected to the *MEL-HEAVEN* story, so I think it was a meaningful tie-in. Some people like Mochi and some people don't, so you can't generalize. Anyway, GARNET is the best.

I listen to the fifth when I'm upset after falling out with someone. I listen to the first when I'm feeling listless. I listen to the fourth curled up in the corner of my room when I'm lonely. The second and third still feel like they were works in progress. “wish★” and “Hadashi no Onna Kami” felt fresh when they first came out, but compared with recent pop tunes like “Namida no Yesterday,” they're nowhere near as substantial. Maybe it's because “Kimi Tsure” and “Shuumatsu” are my favorites.

But that doesn't mean everyone feels that way. “Haru Matsu” and “weekend” feel like one is sung by a woman who's been dumped and the other by a man who dumped someone, so I like listening to them back to back. “Marginal Man,” “Mou Chotto...” “U,” “fill away,” “picture of world” “Nogareru no Machi,” “Only Stay” “naked story,” “pray” “wonderland” They're all pretty catchy songs, but the balance somehow feels off. Still, Gane is the best no matter which songs you pick.

Personally, I don't think the fifth album has any tracks worth skipping. At first, they might sound a little odd because you haven't gotten used to them, but once they grow on you, the whole album feels pretty cohesive from beginning to end.

Nakamura's voice is the kind that doesn't use vibrato. That's true, but there was no need to say it herself. The songs are all arranged to highlight that kind of tone too.

I'm also a fifth-album fan. I rank it above the third and fourth. The overall mood changed around “Kimi to Iu Hikari,” so it's hard to compare the albums before and after that directly. But the fifth is the one I listen to most. I can't say much about the songwriting quality, but the vocal quality has improved.

I don't cry the first time I hear a song anymore... Songs like “Last love song,” “Yume Mita Ato de,” “in little time,” “Crier Girl & Crier Boy ~ice cold sky~,” and “Eien ni Hoore.” With “in little time” in particular, I was already sobbing by the time it got from the intro to the first verse. I don't think I'll ever have that experience again. Lately, it's been “WEEKEND.” The song that left the strongest impression for goosebumps was “Marionette Fantasia.” More recently, probably “Ushinawareta Monogatari,” “Mawarimichi,” and “Kakurenbo.”

Is there even one GARNET song at karaoke that's arranged the way I want? Every one of them sounds just a little off. It's kind of sad that there are so few harmonies, too.

Me neither. I do get goosebumps, but I can't imagine bursting into tears over a song.

My eyes well up pretty often, but I don't actually sob or anything. Personally, songs usually don't sink in on the first listen. Especially with GARNET, it's hard to make out the lyrics without the lyric sheet (though the newer songs may be different). I want to join this conversation, but I just can't get a word in lol. That said, even on my first listen to “Mawarimichi,” the “taking the long way around—” part made me tear up a little.

AZUKI's recent lyrics don't feel very grounded in reality. They don't have that casual, everyday feeling that spills out of pretty phrases, like “Kimi no Uchi” and “Oukan.” Stuff like “I'm on a southern island right now,” calling someone to have pizza together, or the two of them going out to buy ingredients for dinner. Maybe the *MÄR* tie-ins have something to do with it, but there seem to be more emotionally unstable lyrics lately, like “Eden.” It's not bad, but “5th” also has this self-indulgent, lost-in-your-own-world feeling. “Rai Rai Ya,” which seemed like it was trying to evoke the seasons, feels underpowered—including the arrangement. And titles like “Namida no Yesterday” and “Koi no Yasuuri” are just weird. It always feels like it's missing one last step.

I often see people say the lyrics to “His Voyage” are profound, but to me, rather than being the kind of lyrics you overanalyze and turn over in your mind, they're just a story that reads exactly as written— very straightforward and easy to understand. “Marginal Man” feels the same way. I wish Azuki would get a chance to write a picture book or a children's book. I bet she'd be great at it.

It'd probably be a picture book with an absurdly high recommended age range.

I think Azuki changes direction as the band's musical style changes. (I also think the atmosphere of each song may push her that way—for instance, changes in Yurippe's voice, or things like that.) Even so, one thing that's stayed the same since their debut is how she mixes opposite images in her songs: light and darkness, joy and loneliness. Like the part in “Hare-dokei” about “the decorated streets glittering, as if urging us to measure our love~,” or the part in “Namida no...” about waking in the middle of the night, seeing stars so beautiful that you want to look into an even deeper darkness— those are the kinds of passages that draw me to Azuki.

I don't know anything about this, but I'd always thought Yurippe switched to diaphragmatic singing partway through. So why did her singing suddenly get so unnatural around “Naki Naki”? It changed so much all at once, didn't it?

Rather than unnatural, it sounds like she had vocal training. People say the *Music Station* special may have been what prompted it. She seemed pretty nervous then, too, and Yurippe strikes me as someone with a lot of pride. Since the change came so suddenly, a lot of people said they preferred how she used to sound. Some people are still stubbornly saying that even now. At first it did sound a little unnatural, but if you've kept listening over the years, you should be able to appreciate *THE TWILIGHT VALLEY*.

Yurippe really has gotten better at hyping up the crowd and stuff. She's finally starting to look the part. After seeing other acts from Being, GARNET seems unbelievably good live. It really drives home how low the overall standard at Being is.

At GIZA, the only ones who get to hold solo concerts instead of playing at the PANG Factory are GARNET, Aiko, Saegusa, and Kamiki.

The changes in her singing style and voice have a lot to do with performing live. I like her early singing style, too, but if she kept singing that way, her voice wouldn't last through a two-hour show. I'm sure she struggled a lot before settling into the style she has now. She really is working hard. Watch the four live DVDs back to back and you can see all the trial and error.

I wandered around the Azabu-Juban summer festival for three days, but still didn't see Yurippe. Last year, I thought, “Wow, that woman's gorgeous—maybe I'll go talk to her,” then realized she looked just like Yurippe! I froze up and couldn't even say hello... orz I guess if people recognized her, she wouldn't come back.

Nana looked absolutely gorgeous on the fourth album cover and in the lyric booklet. She was great around “Wasuresaki,” too. Ordinary listeners basically like the golden formula of a major key plus a subdominant minor. That's why GARNET doesn't sell well. Their vocals are what they are, after all. Thinking back to five or six years ago, it feels like a different era. After Kuraki left, she was effectively the label's clear number one, but it's kind of bleak when the label's top artist only sells a little over 10,000 copies in the first week...

Did GARNET become the top act by maintaining relatively stable sales? The others either declined or moved to another label. Aiuchi sold so much that she ended up in one-hit-wonder territory.

Rather than the meter being weird, maybe she's just not that great a singer to begin with. But that arrangement is totally that classic Being sound—the guitar intro and all. A little old-fashioned. If the old guy had arranged it, it probably would've become a completely different song.

Just changing the lyrics to ones by Azuki would turn the whole worldview around 180 degrees.

The artists at this company seem to have it pretty easy. Do musicians get a big cut? They hold a live show once every year or two and put out a CD now and then. Even with tie-ins or writing songs for others, can they really make that much money? Does Nana get a salary or royalties? What happens if she can't release songs anymore? It'd be nice if she could live comfortably off royalties! But since she doesn't use her real name, maybe she's already married! If so, is she a full-time housewife?
